Spouse Visa

What is a Spouse Visa?

A UK Spouse Visa, also known as a UK Marriage Visa, is a type of settlement visa that allows the spouse or civil partner of a British citizen or a person with settled status in the UK to join their partner and live together in the United Kingdom.

To be eligible for a Spouse Visa, both the applicant and their UK-based partner must meet certain requirements.

What Are The Requirements For a Spouse Visa?

  • Relationship status: The couple must be legally married or in a civil partnership, or have been living together in a relationship akin to marriage for at least two years.
  • Genuine relationship: The couple must demonstrate that their relationship is genuine and subsisting, with the intention to live together permanently in the UK.
  • Financial requirement: The UK-based partner must meet a minimum income threshold of £18,600 per annum or have adequate savings to prove they can support the applicant without recourse to public funds. This requirement may be higher if there are dependent children involved.
  • English language requirement: The applicant must prove their proficiency in the English language, usually by passing an approved English language test at the required level, unless they are exempt due to their nationality, age, or specific circumstances.
  • Accommodation: The couple must have suitable and available accommodation for themselves and any dependents in the UK.
  • £1,538 fee plus IHS – £1872 – Gone up in April 2022
