Home Office Travel Documents

Not able to obtain a passport from your own country’s national authorities or cannot be issued with a new passport from the same authorities?
It is possible to make an application for a document to travel outside of the UK if you are not British. The type of Travel Document however, will be entirely relevant to the immigration status of an individual and the permissions they possess whilst in the UK.

What is a Travel Document?

A Travel Document itself is a form of passport issued by the UK Home Office to individuals that do not have a recognised nationality or who are unable to obtain a passport from the authorities in their own countries of birth or where they are considered citizens.

Eligibility

To make an application for a Travel Document, you must have been living in the UK and still present in the UK at the time of your application. You must also have certain permissions such as:

  • You have permission to reside as a refugee or stateless person
  • You currently have humanitarian protection (officially accepted that you are in great fear of your country’s national authorities)
  • You have permission to stay (leave to remain) or are settled in the UK (indefinite leave to remain), but you are unable to get a passport or Travel Document from your own country’s national authorities
